Professional relationships are built on shared ideas, experiences, and resources.


They are not simply an exchange of assets.


Coming out of the military and getting into production and advertising, I was too serious. I tried to prove my competence. I wanted to show how quickly I could pick things up so I could make up for my “late start” in the industry due to military service.


I grew to learn that most people in the industry are competent. What sets us apart as people others want to work with are the ideas we share, the experiences we give, and the resources we bring with us.

▪️IDEAS: Are you paying attention to the entire lifecycle of a project? Instead of just executing on the backend, are you brainstorming with the team on the front end? Are you listening carefully and responding thoughtfully?

▪️EXPERIENCES: Are you taking everything – including yourself – too seriously? Are you fun to be around? Are you kind?

▪️RESOURCES: Are you the person who says, “Well, at my last job, we did it this way.” or are you the person who brings solutions for this environment you're in now?

Tomorrow, we're going to dive in to the dichotomy of relationships: serving and being served.
